East-West Integrated Healthcare
Empowers Men and Women to Make Healthcare Choices
that Resonate with their Core Values

Philosophy of Practice
Principles central to the practice of naturopathy include:

  1. The healing power of nature. Recognize the body's inherent ability to heal itself, and the naturopathic physician's role in facilitating and enhancing self-healing.
  2. Importance of minimizing harmful side effects of treatment. Whenever possible choose gentler, less strong, therapeutic options.
  3. Awareness that suppressing symptoms alone may sometimes get in the way of discovering the cause of a disease.
  4. Self-responsibility. The role of the naturopathic physician is to educate and encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own care.
  5. Whole person. Naturopathic physicians strive to take into account all aspects of their patients’ health including emotional, social, and spiritual aspects.

Dr. Don Underwood

Doctor Don was born and raised in the verdant rainforests of southeast Alaska. His childhood was spent climbing glaciers, scaling mountains, exploring forests, and salmon fishing on his grandparent's boat. He graduated high school and was planning on joining the navy after college, but didn't find college to his liking. So he returned to Alaska and entered the job force. But after years of working, he began having problems with sharp pains shooting down his right arm. His mother persuaded him to see a visiting acupuncturist, and to his amazement, after only one appointment, the 2 years of pain vanished.

He was so impressed and awed at what had occurred, he decided at that moment to spend his life healing others. All of his attention was spent on attending acupuncture school and to return to Alaska to open a health clinic. He graduated from the University of Alaska in 1997 and moved to Seattle to attend Bastyr University, one of the nations leading alternative health schools. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelors degree in Oriental Medicine, and later in 2001 received his master's degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He has had extensive training in pain management and massage techniques. He completed two weeks in Beijing, China where he worked side by side with an Oriental medical doctor in a health clinic. But during his time at Bastyr he decided that to truly help others become well, he would need to become a doctor.

The traditional path of allopathic medical school was open to him, but he felt that a blend of eastern medicine and western medicine would help his clients more and would be the direction modern medicine would be taking. So he packed up his bags and moved to Arizona where he attended Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe Arizona. While in Arizona he continued his acupuncture practice and was licensed by that state in 2002. During his time at medical school he worked with some of the leading physical medicine and pain management doctors in the entire state and created his own style of physical medicine. In 2003 he found the quaint community of Anthem, and even though it required a two hour commute each day to complete his education, he knew that Anthem was perfect for him. He graduated from SCNM in 2005 and began seeing patients in the fall of that year.

Dr. Underwood clinical focus and expertise are in areas of pain management, Chinese medicine, family medicine and weight loss. He has also received training in natural, alternative methods to enhance a woman's beauty. Examples include face lifts using acupuncture, and tonifying skin using herbs and supplements.

Dr. Don's philosophy on the definition of naturopathic medicine is the following:

"I believe that naturopathic medicine is a style of medicine that uses natural products and remedies by choice, but not by limitation".

Dr. Underwood is fully capable of ordering traditional lab work, radiology scans, and can prescribe pharmaceutical prescriptions when needed.

Dr. Jennifer Gentry Calvo

Having suffered from chronic disease since early childhood, Dr. Calvo has unofficially been a part of the traditional medical establishment for many years. During her health battles, she learned first hand that medicine should be much more than just using drugs to treat symptoms and diseases. In her quest to seek out alternatives to conventional medicine, she discovered the philosophy of naturopathic medicine. From first hand experience, she learned that lifestyle choices and nutrition, not drugs, were the answer to well being. Having improved her own heath, she felt it her responsibility to provide this medical alternative to others. Naturopathic Medicine seemed like the perfect career path: a doctor that is trained to use both conventional and traditional approaches so that patients, including herself, could have choices in healthcare.

In 1997, Dr. Calvo graduated magna cum laude from Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina with her bachelor of science in biochemistry. She spent the following three years in research and development for the pharmaceutical industry. In 2001 she chose to fulfill a dream of becoming a physician. She received her doctorate of naturopathic medicine (NMD) from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona in 2006.

SCNM is an accredited college of naturopathic medicine in the United States and trains holistic primary care physicians as practitioners of the most comprehensive of alternative medicine disciplines. This accredited medical program provides post-graduate education in the basic and clinical sciences common to all medical education. Furthermore, it trains doctors in holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness.

After graduating with honors and receiving her license, Dr. Calvo spent nine months working as a practitioner in an urgent care center in Mesa, Arizona serving the underprivileged. During this training, she honed her skills as a physician and urgent care and primary care provider. During this time Dr. Calvo also began teaching. She is currently faculty director of the western sciences division at Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture and an assisting professor at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine.

Dr. Calvo is now offering her skills and passion for natural healing to Anthem. By firmly adhering to the basic principles of naturopathic medicine, she promotes health and healing on all levels, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Her goal is to empower her patients with knowledge that enables them to reach and maintain optimal health. Dr. Calvo's clinical focus and expertise are in areas of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, lifestyle counseling, homeopathy, physical medicine, and women's health. Her special interests include helping patients overcome hormone imbalance, infertility, pre/peri-menopause, PCOS, thyroid disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, asthma, allergies and autoimmune disorders.
